THEY GAVE US WINGS - the Famous 5 - les célèbres 5
24 x 30, mixed media. September 19, 2010. In the early 1920's, 5 women banded together in Alberta to challenge the Supreme Court of Canada & the British Privy Council in "the Person's Case". On October 18, 1929, through their efforts, women were finally considered "persons" in matters of rights & privileges, thus breaking ground for them to enter the Senate. Even though it was many years before women of color were given the same rights, these daring five women laid the foundation so we could follow. The seeds for the painting were planted at the Radio Canada International interview on Sept. 7, 2010 (below) & by the Montreal Council of Women last year.
