DEKHNI DAYS No. 1
24x30 acrylic with sand from Goa. July 30, 2014. As a little girl,I was often made to join in as my aunties would dance the DEKHNI, one of the most popular of the Goan folk dances. It depicts a group of women pleading with boatmen to take them across the heaving river to get to a wedding on the other side. The women offer their jewellry, flowers, anklets but the men refuse. After an eternity, they finally relent and take them across. I sang and memorized the Konkani words which at this stage of my life come back to haunt me. The image has been used in Joe Figueredo's recent book "The Right Choice".
