GOA AT THE INQUISITION
11x14 ins, acrylic on canvas board. October 3, 2014. In order to entice the Hindus to convert to Catholicism in the 14th century, the Portuguese missionaries, including the Jesuits, offered food and shelter as an enticement when they landed in Goa. At the time of the Inquisition (1540 - 1810), non-believers were burned at the stake, hundreds of temples demolished & holy books & ancient manuscripts set on fire. "Western" culture i.e. pork and beef, music, dress, Baroque architecture, language, was forced upon those who converted.
