JANUARY: The frigid, sombre days of January are upon us. I can't believe I let 14 days into the new year go by without putting paint to canvas. As much as I wanted to, it seems I needed a reprieve.

It didn't help to be constantly bombarded with disturbing news from digital and print media, events so tragic that no one could possibly escape without a frown.

With images piercing and colliding from all corners of our fragile planet almost on an hourly basis, I felt I had to make sense of everything unfolding, or be doomed.

So my first painting emerged, compressed, squeezed, crushed, pushed into a small area of stretched canvas allowing for very little breathing space. It reflects my feelings, my concerns, my hopes and wishes for a year that will slowly transform into something brighter. It must.

I feel a burden has been lifted. My peace dove has winged its way again, fluttering and floundering just above ground but ready to land with a thud again very quickly. As always, she will pause, look around, reconsider, negotiate the direction of the wind, then flap her wings and soar to the sun.

Happy new year to you all !
