Notturno doloroso
16 x 20 ins, acrylic. March 6, 2015. After watching the BBC documentary "India's Daughter" on youtube(link below, deleted on copyright grounds) about the 2012 rape & murder of young medical student Jyoti Singh, I was overcome with sadness and anger after hearing what her rapists and their lawyers had to say. Their sick mentality and convoluted ideas about women left me speechless just when I thought we had come a long way. Notturno in music terminology is a Night Song (the rape happened after dark) to be played with sorrow and with fury. May Jyoti's lament echo and ripple far and wide. Change can only happen if we all desire it passionately and are not afraid to speak up.

The world will be united one day with all hands held together. The 'arts' will do this by reaching out far and wide.As I always say,"Smile out loud" it is contagious.

Your women look like they are wearing helmets, united, going to war. They are beautiful but they have no soul. Maybe that is the only way to fight.

What a beautiful painting and important message. Off to New York for a few days and hope to march alongside other women at the People's March on Sunday. UN Status of Women are celebrating the 20th Ann. of the Beijing Conf.and the start of their gathering

Another painting that speaks louder than words, testimony of your social engagement.

A beautiful painting born of a terrible happening. We are constantly reminded of the fragility and finiteness of all things on planet Earth and that is a sobering thought.

Thank you for sharing this. It is an absolutely lovely painting, too beautiful for the horrible act of rape. You bring beauty to even the ugliest. Such is the role of the artist. You are a sower of hope.

Very powerful painting. As you said, just when we think we have come so far.

What tragic sadness comes through the beauty - ghastly resignation in the midst of vibrant colours and decorative jewelry and clothing. Yet the object (music instrument) connects them and the hands speak of a long bond which joins them.
