Coleen Chadwick: Hello Cheryl I was interested to hear about your childhood in Lahore. My parents were born and grew up there. My mother went to St Josephs school as here aunts were nuns there. Do you know if there is an alumni group? I could not find their site online as my mother who is 82 yrs old and living with me in England wanted to meet some of her classmates and she also knew some girls who attended the Sacred Heart school. My parents left after partition and went to live in Kenya. My mother has family in Montreal and has been there before. My father belonged to the ango Indian community in Lahore (Nicholls) and my mother was a D'Cruze (goan). Congratulations on your award and accomplishments. Kind Regards. Coleen Chadwick

Ida Nozzi: I spent most of last weekend reading about you and your story and all of your wonderful paintings and accomplishments. I was totally floored! You are an inspiration! Not only to all women but to mankind. I just love your attitude on life. Your strength is admirable! You a remarkable woman, I loved reading your biography, your life story is so interesting. Chloe is so fortunate to have a brilliant grandmother as a role model. Infact, I see alot of your beauty in Chloe already. I love the way you organized your website by year and theme. Brilliant! I looked at all your paintings, and my favorites are the Griffintown collection especially MJ no more, I clearly remember that sad day. I also love all the Nirvana collection. Oh, and so many more that I want to mention, like the Montreal scenes (farine five roses). I, like you, am also a "Montrealaise" they're all extraordinary. Misson accomplished! My spirits are definitely lifted when I view your work.

L.R.: Hi Cheryl, i just wanted to touch base and tell you that i have visited your website and i would love to use your artwork for a journal issue and/or a book cover ...we are a very small press with few resources, so all i would be able to offer you is a $250 honorarium for the use of your artwork -- but hopefully it will give your work a lot of exposure in return. Let me know if this would be acceptable for you before i fall madly in love with one of your pieces! Canadian Woman Studies, York University

Rosalind GIll, York University, Toronto: Cheryl, I am overwhelmed by your art. Besides the high technical quallity, there is an openness of expression, a maturity, an honesty and a generosity that really touches me deeply - and not to mention your modesty. What an accomplished woman you are.
December 5, 2010 8:03PM

Jessie Lowenfeld: Looking at your work again and indeed, powerful is a good description. You've got a kind of audacity using those cheerful colours with your bold strokes, which I've usually seen you using to depict peace, beauty and love in a more straightforward way, to show something that might easily not be all about smiles. Maybe it's because, from what I've already seen of your work, I remember doves, the air, and dancing women - these women marching are - for me - a new way of seeing your palette and your hand.
November 29, 2010 3:49AM

Suzanne Caron: I love your painting 'Summer Sizzle'! And a sizzler it is!!!

Azra (Zahiruddin) Farrell: Dear Cheryl: I looked you up on Google after Saman told me that you had been named Montreal Woman of the Year. Your art is beautiful. The biographic material very touching. You look like the same young woman from the early 1960's, but with the lines that come with life's ups and downs. Your three sons are handsome. I live in Kingston, NY. Am a grandmother of two, and mother of one daughter, who turns 40 this year. Hope to hear from you. All the best. Bunny

Raymond: Hi Ms. Braganza, I am Raymond Legaspi from Goa's Herald newspaper (www.oheraldo.in). It's Goa's oldest and most circulated daily. It used to be "O Heraldo," a Portuguese paper but it's now published in English. I caught your story from the Goan Voice website. Your life story as told in your acceptance speech is so touching and universal, it really speaks of the struggle of women everywhere. Dare I say, your strength and resilience remind me of my own mother. I want to do a cover story on you as an artist, a mother, living as part of a minority, and most importantly as a human being who's weathered a lot of challenges. All of Goa should know your story. How may I contact you? My email is in your guest book, if that is fine with you. Thank you very much. Raymond

Anita Menon: SOUTH ASIAN CONGRESS - MCGILL: I am so happy to have met you yesterday. I feel that you opened the door for a lot of the delegates to share their personal stories by the model you set in your speech at the opening ceremonies. Your honesty is a breath of fresh air and your artwork is remarkable. I'm not an art expert and so I can't use the words to express why I like your work (I visited your website) but I know that you are able to express a woman's beauty and vibrancy alongside messages of hope and peace. I hope to meet you again very soon.
October 19, 2008 1:19PM

Amina Gauhar: My dear friend: My heart is crying-with deep emotions that I cannot fully express. I would have called you but would not have been able to speak without breaking down. i received your cd today, and the message at the start brought tears to my eyes. You are a true symbol of survival and hope. I do not like to think of my cancer, and do not speak of it at all, but I too am a survivor, and your words brought it all back. I love your spirit, your talent and the beautifully aesthetic way you express yourself. You are truly blessed and now you are blessing us with your wonderful music. Such a great selection! You have been in my home, and your music right now is filling my home as if it belongs here. What memories it brings back! Thanks Cheryl. Live long in hope, beauty and joy. With much love: Amina

Susan Snelgrove: At our September meeting of the Artistes Hudson Artists we had the pleasure of another visit and lecture from Cheryl based on her recent trip to India. It always inspires and amazes me how she captures the emotion and vibrancy of the people and the places she visits and manages to share it so easily with her audience. Her use of colour and brushstrokes convey movement, light and feeling in a spirit that is not only captivating and intense but seemingly effortless. Her paintings are both naive and richly intuitive.....a combination that reaches out to the viewer's senses as well as his/her heart. Cheryl is not only a delightful person to listen to, she is a perfect example of a true artist whose images on canvas reflect her soul and her passion. I can't begin to tell you how rewarding it was to hear her speak and have her share her experiences and inspiration with our group. I'm already looking forward to the next time! Susan Snelgrove

Sylvie Lochlan: Re. your KEYNOTE SPEECH AT MCGILL Sept. 19, 2008 - What a wonderful and informative, albeit sad, realisation of womens' plight in India. Your presentation touched the hearts of everyone in that hall on Friday... It must have been quite an undertaking to organize such a project but so vital to create awareness of what reality seems to be in some parts of our world. So I wish to congratulate you and all the other beautiful people involved in this endeavour. It must have been difficult to swallow for the young men of that origin and gender who were there on Friday, and who don't at all share those sentiments or need for power over a gender with inferior physical strength. However, we know that some of these men were even taught by their own mother how to treat their women, and what to expect of them let, alone the example they were exposed to by their fathers. Henceforth, as you so rightly said, it will take a long time before the situation rights itself. Although, I feel that there is a great consciousness happening on this planet at this time of fury of information, and hopefully this will hasten the propagation of awareness. Men have always been our protectors, but what many have to learn is that the skill ends there and that they cannot own or control what they protect. Incidentally, here in Canada, or the whole of America, to be more specific, the same fatal attraction to power and control exists amongst some men. But because education in this area is more available, and religion does not have the stronghold that it used to have on the behaviour of couples, and in particular, woman of childbearing age , this scenario is not as prevalent as in India. I knew such a family. They had 21 children all from the same woman. In this case the very Christian father committed suicide. He was trying to follow an impossible demand from a religious belief. Another similar story of a woman who being very religious, ignored the advice of a doctor who told her she should no longer have children as she had a very bad heart problem.....she died leaving 5 children plus a newborn motherless. I just feel that women and men should learn to love themselves enough to have the backbone to refuse what is not acceptable to them as a human being. To know that love rules and not fear or power or control, nor the wrath of God, is the goal that must be spread around and around and around. Tasks performed for love are so superior to the ones performed from fear. With Love and Light, Sylvie Lochlan, Hudson, PQ

Davetta Faria: Re. your interview on CBC RADIO yesterday. You were terrific. I loved that in the midst of all the bad news of school gang war, terrible economic fall-out, traffic in the usual chaos, there was your beautiful voice of reason, reminding all of us of the beauty in the world, the arts, the connection of person to person. I am very sure you touched so many lives with the elegant simplicity with which you presented your story, and the music you shared was extremely moving. Thank you! Davetta

Joe & Bridget Leo: Thank you for sharing your work. It is truly amazing and inspiring. We are so glad we finally got to meet up. Keep up the good work. All our love
September 21, 2008 6:10PM

davetta faria: The first thing I notice about these unique paintings is the vitality. The exotic colors and shapes draw me in. But this is just the beginning, because it is the stories in these paintings that take hold and don't let go. The longer I ponder them, the more they have to say to me. I am sure that each person viewing the paintings will find their individual stories in them too.

Eithne Lawless: Hi Cheryl, Such an amount of work and it's still only July. And playing the piano as well! Do let me know when your CD comes out. That will be a must. I've just enjoyed an hour or so looking through your pictures and reading both your explanations (along with words of wisdom) as to what and where the pictures are and also all the compliments from others about your work. I think you are very brave with your colours I could never imagine doing anything like that. I think Paula told you we're on our way to India for a few weeks at the end of October and will include Goa for a week or so. Seeing all the pictures you have of Goa I am looking forward even more to our holiday. It makes me itchy to draw/sketch and hope I will have a little time to do something, however small. I will have to make sure to have plenty of space on my camera memory discs. Eithne, Dublin

Suzanne Caron: You seem to have no end of interesting things to paint, being flooded with sights, smells and tastes that are so unlike those found here. And color! Glorious color!! Flowers and colorful fabric, passion fruit and mangoes. Did I already mention how I'd love to be there too? I'm happy to know you're enjoying every moment of your time there and creating so many paintings. I just looked at your website and love the new paintings! Coconut Woman is wonderful, and Macchi Walli - talk about fresh fish! The vendor is literally sitting among a mini ocean teeming with live ones swimming all around her. Maybe she's a fish of another color. Ha! I love it! As for Bathe and Binge, what could be a more appropriate color to go with such a name as that brilliant orangy red ground to entice one to step up and order. I'll have anything made with either mango (my favorite fruit) or chicoo (would really like to taste that) or both! And make it a double while you're at it! The reality of winter in Quebec has once again hit home in a big way. It's March now. We don't want to look through the glass and see snow up to the bottom of the window panes anymore. In the meantime, I'll enjoy reading your journals and looking at your vibrant works on canvas and be satisfied to know that there is indeed color out beyond the grasp of a Canadian winter. ~ thinking of you and glad you're there and not here (for your sake, of course) Suzanne Rigaud Mountain, Quebec

Janet Russell: I am totally blown away by the beauty of your pictures in the Afghan Support Calendar. Thank SO much for your vital help for the Afghan Women and the personal love you have placed in each picture. I have one for my office and am buying more as soon as they come in as gifts for others. By offering your gift of artistic skill, you are helping us at Canadians in Support of Afghan Women (a group of people under the umbrella organization CW4WA) to continue to provide education for girls as well as to fund the resource centre for women. At this centre, women of all ages are able to make items for sale and send them directly to us. As volunteers, we sell the items and send all the money back to the ladies so they can provide food and life necessities for their families. Since most are widows, they cannot do anything else to help themselves. Their hard work is symbolized by this Calendar you have worked so diligently to prepare for them.

Selina Ulhaq, London Eng.: I discovered your paintings, especially the paintings that capture female subjects or female realities through working at IMKAAN and saw how refreshing, vivid, imaginative and inspiring your work was because it reveals the realities, the hopes of liberation and happiness and love within sometimes darker, pernicious powers and controls that are unjust, silencing and constricting to the women you paint. Often they are not at all and you celebrate that. The emotions in your work blend between colours and shapes and in the very paint strokes of your work and in that way, I was utterly in awe of your paintings because they spoke of the everyday work IMKAAN and other domestic violence and womens organisations seek to deliver without words. We share the same objectives in both my dissertation that wanted to grasp that sense and also through my work at IMKAAN. I absolutely adore the way you always, even in the darker and obscure paintings, celebrate women's life, there is always lingering hope or a dream of a better place within the imagination or soul of the women you paint or in the outside world.
